Tales of a Beer Entrepreneur

Rupert Thompson started as a graduate trainee at what was then Britain's biggest brewer, Bass, and ran groups of pubs before concentrating on marketing, eventually becoming Brand Director of Carling. From there he moved to Morland plc where he ran the 270 Tenanted pub estate and also developed a new brand Old Speckled Hen to the point where it was competing with Newcastle Brown Ale for leadership of the bottled ale sector in UK supermarkets. In 2000 he founded a new company, Refresh, and bought the Ushers brewery beer brand names, and subsequently took over Wychwood Brewery, famous for Hobgoblin beer, and Brakspear's brewery of Henley. With sales topping £30m in 2008, he sold the company to Marstons plc and is currently working on a new start up.
