SCDF Networking - Friday 31st August

Last Friday of the month Network Meeting Wests Bar, West Street, Chichester 12:30-14:30

About 30 creatives gather on the last Friday of the month to have a natter about things that interest them and develop links with like minded people. Have a drink, be sociable and let the creative juices flow!

Coastal West Sussex Branch
Thanks to funding from the 5 towns network, managed by Gemma Warr, we are in process of setting up a Coastal West Sussex Branch. The first stage is to create a steering group, if you are based in Selsey, Bognor Regis, Littlehampton, Worthing or Shoreham and would like to be in at the beginning of this new venture email Peter Spence at pspence@scdf.org.uk

Designing Demand
Part of this joint venture between the Design Council and SEEDA enables designers to get their profile in a directory that will be made available to design buyers. Want to get on the list? Drop us an email to info@scdf.org.uk and we’ll send you the ‘Expression of Interest’ form for you to complete.
Chiloft
Negotiations to deliver customised space for designers on favourable terms in central Chichester are gathering pace. Those of you that have not registered your interest should do so now at info@scdf.org.uk
Fori Forums

Groups like SCDF are springing up all over the country – we are working with other groups from Cornwall to Newcastle to establish best practice and share our experience with others – if you know of any other groups drop us an email at info@scdf.org.uk

Portsmouth Branch Launch

We’ve had the ‘are you interested’ meeting (more than 50 were) we’ve got the monthly networking started, now for the big one… Wayne will launch the branch on 8th November at the Spinnaker Tower. PUT THE DATE IN YOUR DIARY NOW and wait for the invitation to drop in your mail box. We are looking for sponsors at £250 a go to keep our meagre funds intact – so if you want to push your name in Portsmouth and south east Hants we’d like to hear from you at info@scdf.org.uk

Spinnaker Tower
Design Competition
Like to design a trophy that will carry your name into perpetuity (that means forever for those of you that have difficulty with long words!)
We are collaborating with Young Enterprise across the coast from Portsmouth to Brighton to make awards for design and we thought we should offer something a bit more ‘designed’ than the usual cup or plaque. Judges will be Steve Wilson, Carl Downer and Peter Spence. Steve has knocked up a quick example to get you started. No prizes for the winner, just fame and fortune in the future!
SCDF Award
Creative Shoreham

We are partnering Arun Enterprise Gateway in running an exhibition and workshop for designers, designer makers and the like from the coastal strip at the Ropetackle centre in Shoreham at the end of September. Like to display your work? Email info@scdf.org.uk for more details.

DesignTalks

Like to make your mark on the ‘Design Talk Circuit’? Like to be the next Wayne? Got something to say but not sure how to get it over? We’re kicking around the idea of running an agency to get gigs for our members. First we would need to offer presentation skills training to aspirants and we are trying to source funding for this.

Let us know if you would be interested at info@scdf.org.uk

Hayling Island
A couple of members attended a briefing for stakeholders (we’re one but didn’t know it) on the Hayling Island Seafront MasterPlan. Local designers who would like to join the SCDF Consultation Group should email info@scdf.org.uk Hayling Island

Amanda D’Arcy
recently presented her latest fine art work at a “portfolio review” to a number of prestigious international gallery owners and photography buyers. Her work was widely acclaimed and particularly popular with gallery owners from America, Poland, France and England. Reviewers variously described her “Dark Trees” series as “beautiful, intriguing, mysterious and gothic”. It is hoped that this will lead to wide exposure of her work in overseas exhibitions. The series, which is fully entitled “Dark Trees and other journeys of the soul” can be viewed on her website. Trees by Amanda D’Arcy

New Recycled Glass Lighting launched at Chelsea Flower Show

I create fountains, lighting, furniture and sculptural pieces out of recycled and re-used materials. I exhibited at Chelsea this year and launched several new ranges.

Icelight
Icelights are hand-cast in West Sussex using crushed, recycled, bottle-bank glass - made for indoor and outdoor installation.

Icelight Fountain
Cascading water adds sound and sparkling movement to Icelights, bringing a magical beauty to the evening garden.

Pyramid
Sunlight shimmers on the facets of the recycled glass surface during the day, while in the evening the internal lamps transform the Pyramid into a bold form against planting or the skyline.

Glowdome
Fun garden lights to use on the patio, amongst shrubbery, or wherever the imagination leads.

Deer Park Alpha

Deer Park Alpha has been short-listed from over 4000 entries in an international design competition to design a cart for the homeless. However, instead of the carbon fibre mega-bucks solution proposed by other designers, we proposed that the technology for the ‘shelter in a cart’ already exists and can be acquired cheaply. Our proposal titled ‘Dignity 3000’ is made up from cheap, proven components that can be acted on now, and at minimal expense to the taxpayer. The project has been exhibited internationally and has been submitted to the homeless charity Shelter for consideration as a solution.

Lime Food Design

Lime Food Design, sister company to the Award-Winning Seal Events Limited, recently opened its doors to a new kitchen unit at the Riverside Industrial Estate in Littlehampton. The bespoke catering company, staffed by experts in the field with over 30 years experience, held tastings for local venues wowing them with the highest quality food with innovative formats and decoration. Lime also recently began a new environmental awareness policy, making sure it’s food miles are low, and that local sourcing is used wherever possible. This, combined with the stunning cuisine, ensures that carbon footprints are minimal whilst still maintaining ‘a blend of traditional and contemporary food and service’.

Hutton Creative

Its been an exciting month at HC, we started off with shooting some photography for an event run by Carbon Black and now are looking to win them as a retainer for the next year helping to build their brand around to world. Staying on the automotive theme we have also been preparing a new online E-magazine called ROAD which is all about driving and car culture. In the last week we have been working on some prospective business with a few London companies, all being well all will be revealled next month!

Boxall Sayer

Boxall Sayer is to join forces with fellow firms Denley King and Fletcher McNeill, and to seek a listing for the combined practices – under the name of holding company "Baqus" – on the Alternative Investment Market (London's junior stock exchange). Baqus stands for 'Building and Quantity Surveyors'. It is anticipated that the flotation will take place mid-November, but each firm will retain its existing name and identity at least for the time being.

The flotation is not just about raising funds for expansion; we see many advantages to the practice, clients and colleagues, including larger staff resources and good geographical spread. It enables us to thank our existing excellent staff and attract new staff by offering them a stake in the business via share schemes. This is an exciting new development for the firm and we look forward to the challenges ahead.
