Designing Demand

The Designing Demand programme is offering free workshops to SCDF members to learn more about sustainable design

and how designers can be included on the Designer List and be available for future work on completion of an Expression of Interest form.

(This is a programme of 9 workshops, run by South East Design, under the Solutions for Business banner and European

funded, the aim is to embed the use of sustainable practices in SMEs within the south east coastal region by

developing the skills of designers operating in this area. Once skilled, the designers will be in an excellent

position to receive recommendations to work with SMEs, on a fully commercially paid basis. The programme starts in

March and runs through the summer at venues in Brighton, Chichester and Southampton).

Calling all designers - Improve design law!

Sign up to ACID's No 10 Petitions NOW!

Are you an innovator, creative thinker, a talented designer - a leader not a follower? Do you worry about your new ideas; new products being ripped off before they reach true market potential? If so, join hundreds of designers who have already signed up to ACID's No 10 Petitions!

Petition signatory, ACID Ambassador Sebastian Conran at a recent Parliamentary reception said, "There needs to be a fundamental change in attitudes that supporting IP theft is as much a crime as other acquisitive theft such as burglary.

ACID LOBBY the influential lobbying arm of Anti Copying in Design has launched TWO Number 10 Petitions to improve design law. The first Number 10 Petition is to create changes and improvements to the copyright and unregistered design right infringement damages regime to create a greater deterrent against IP theft.

The second Number 10 Petition is to create a law which introduces criminal sanctions for design right infringement. If your wallet is stolen, it is a crime and you can involve the police whereas if your new designs are stolen you can only take civil action. Many designers lose their livelihoods through blatant design theft.

Dids Macdonald, ACID's CEO added, "Sebastian Conran speaks for the whole of the design industry when he describes IP theft as a real crime, let us hope the Government will start to take notice of the real threat this poses to the creative industries."

Go the <a href="http://www.acid.uk.com">ACID website</a> website where the links are on the first page or go direct to Number 10 Petitions website: <a href="http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/IPDamages/">http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/IPDamages/</a>

Is a Knowledge Economy still Available?

<strong>Is a knowledge economy really achievable when knowledge can so easily be stolen?</strong>

The trade organisation, British Design Innovation (BDI), represents many of the leading industrial designers, service designers and innovation professionals in the UK. Among other initiatives, BDI developed the Open Innovation Challenge™ (OIC), an innovation process model utilised to support knowledge-based propositions originating in the commercial design sector with inherent value in both hard and soft IP.

OIC not only supports designers’ trading activities with corporate brand owners seeking external innovation, but also reinforces the status and differentiation of their propositions from crowd-sourced ideas.

It was back in 2004 that BDI introduced the concept of Knowledge Transfer to its members and to those seeking to engage with them, highlighting the crucial role it plays in professional practice and commercial transactions.

The knowledge transfer principle now regularly crops up in creative industry initiatives & communications, and paid-to-think design firms are grasping the value of knowledge as a trading commodity. However, those seeking to bring innovation into their businesses are still struggling with the concept of paying for it, or separating knowledge- and solution-based propositions from those that are simply ideas unsupported by in-depth knowledge or know-how.

Unfortunately, in order to communicate the value of a proposition based on customer & sector-led knowledge and solution-led know-how, it is often necessary to demonstrate or pass on a good deal of the knowledge supporting it. Even under stringent conditions of commercial confidentiality, there exist otherwise intelligent individuals who believe it is fair game to claim someone else’s knowledge and rationale as their own, and utilise it to produce very similar – and sometimes identical – propositions under their own label.

If the text were a story and the product a book, such activities would be denounced as plagiarism in the publishing world, and source credits would be a minimum requirement in the digital and visual industries if copyright infringement claims were to be avoided. However, innovations translated into new market applications for products and services are invariably knowledge-and research-based. Such pre-patent concepts, 3D applications and unprotected designs, service design, business models and processes are consistently purloined by others on the basis that ideas cannot be protected. But these are not merely unsubstantiated ideas – they are tradable knowledge-based solutions developed by professionals with know-how. Under these circumstances, utilising and commercialising someone else’s’ work is surely knowledge theft?

It is accepted that knowledge transfer has a tradable value. Universities consistently trade and transfer knowledge commercially with industry (an activity encouraged, promoted and funded by the government). Knowledge-based professional Originators are no different to universities apart for the fact that they have the know-how to take knowledge a step further and translate it in to market applications in the form of user-led products, services and propositions.

Good business ethics, a strong personal morality and best professional practices alone cannot protect professional Originators (who include scientists and industrial designers) from those with few qualms about replicating others’ work, for recent history has shown that such attributes do not always reside in rogue individuals employed by commercial businesses. And plagiaristic activity – intentional or otherwise – is rife within a public sector that appears to predominantly employ individuals of high intelligence but little or no commercial experience. Many naively believe that the words ‘public domain’ means ‘free to all’. They don’t.

In a global market where the internet and ‘crowd power’ now hold sway, the existing copyright system is a long way away from providing the protection required to stimulate an open innovation society. Current IPR protection is incapable of drawing a distinction between undefined early-stage ideas on the one hand, and fully-rationalised knowledge- and solution-based propositions on the other. We need a new IPR category in order to protect the latter.

<strong>In innovation, all skills have a value. Don’t they…?</strong>

If our society were solely populated by creative Originators with equal skill sets and the money to bring new innovations, services, products or propositions to market, nobody would need partners and everybody could more easily protect their ideas, knowledge, know-how and commercial positions. In the real world, of course, skilled Originators are a minority who need route-to-market partners to assist in the commercialisation of their work. (We at BDI call this a ‘division of labour’ model, based on the precept that no product, service, process or proposition ever comes to market without the shared expertise of several key parties.)

So why do some with route-to-market skills find it acceptable to exploit the Originator before the idea, and expend so much time and money doing so at the risk of their reputations? Such futile behaviour blocks true innovation because professional ‘ideapreneurs’ – the innovators, originators and creative businesses – are at the mercy of those who are not themselves innovative.

I mentioned knowledge theft earlier. This is a difficult subject to conjure with. Arguably, the majority approach has always been to give knowledge away for free in order to demonstrate expertise, in exchange for professional status, commercial engagement or public relations coverage. However, it becomes an issue when knowledge is used to support the rationale, narrative and validation of an innovative concept (be it a product, service or business proposition), and that knowledge is then ‘lifted’ and applied to the commercial benefit of another individual or organisation – who rarely attribute source credits and all too often repackage it as their organisations’ internal creation.

The arguments for such knowledge theft invariably include the line: “Well, ideas can’t be protected, so if they’re presented in the course of seeking commercial engagement they’re fair game!” But continuing along such a dismal path can only result in the existing barriers to innovation between Originators, route-to-market partners and industry being drawn up even higher.

To break down these barriers, knowledge and know-how value needs to be addressed in the paid-to-think marketplace – in other words, by those who have proved their value and earn their living as professional Originators. But it also needs to be supported by a new trading model (and IPR system) that enables the appropriate trading of fully-rationalised knowledge- and solution-based propositions between Originators and route-to-market exploiters, to mutual benefit. And which ultimately, of course, benefits the customer and consumer.

Knowledge alone has little value unless it can be translated into innovative products, services and propositions by those with the know-how and skills to do so. When they do, professional Originators should not be continually exploited and undermined – and yes, cheated – out of commercial benefit. Continuance of such a modus operandi can only stifle innovation & crush the spirit of the very people the government professes to support in an attempt to turn the UK economy around.

If the powers that be, from the government and the Intellectual Property Office on down, really want to build a strong knowledge economy, they need to take these issues on board and find the ways and means of resolving them.

SCDF 2010 An Exciting Year Ahead!

<p>As more <a href="http://www.scdf.org.uk/members.php">designers</a> in the region see the benefits of <a href="http://www.scdf.org.uk/members_signup.php">Joining the SCDF</a> we look forward to expanding the membership base and the number of events we hold. There are lots of positives that encourage us to take this approach.</p>
<h2>Positives:</h2>
<ul><li>An increase in membership to over 400 in 2009, 500 by the end of 2010 is a realistic target</li>
<li>Members increasingly recognise the value of their membership through ‘bottom line’ results of collaborations</li>
<li>Each year we have expanded our programme of meetings and events, 2010 will see further expansion</li>
<li>A branch network of committed volunteers, they see that ‘the more you put in, the more you get out’</li>
<li>A comprehensive website, further investment will be made available for enhancements</li>
<li>The regular monthly eNewsletter will start to generate revenue</li>
<li>Our high profile board of directors is committed to the continued success of SCDF</li>
<li>Our growing reputation means we are sought out by other bodies for collaborative projects</li></ul>
<p><strong>However</strong>, it’s not all plain sailing there are some...</p>
<h2>Negatives:</h2>
<ul><li>The economic climate</li>
<li>The run-off of our existing funding arrangements</li>
<li>The impact of reduced government funding</li></ul>
<p>This has implications for our members, not only on the level of membership fees charged, but the commitment required from volunteers on the various committees.

We have begun a comprehensive review of everything we do and the way we do it, aimed at securing the future of SCDF. Be prepared for some changes. If you wish to contribute to the debate please email <a href="mailto:pspence@scdf.org.uk">pspence@scdf.org.uk</a>

As Wayne says on the <a href="http://www.scdf.org.uk/">SCDF homepage</a> of the website, <em>‘2010 will be a critical year for SCDF. Funding from existing sources will be reduced and if we want to be sustainable we will have to become much more commercial in our approach’.</em>

To sum up, 2010 will indeed be critical, it will be challenging to all of us determined to see SCDF flourish; it will also be exciting and FUN!

If you are not yet a member, <a href="http://www.scdf.org.uk/members_signup.php">Join us now</a>, if you are, get more involved.</p>

PTT pays £65,000 to Morgan Furniture over High Court Copying Claim

Leading contract furniture designer and Anti Copying in Design (ACID) member Morgan Contract Furniture has resolved its High Court claim against PTT Design Limited. In the High Court action, Morgan claimed that PTT had copied a number of Morgan designs which PTT had then supplied to Hyatt Hotels during 2006. Morgan had been tendering for the same hotel refurbishment project.

The terms of settlement, achieved at a mediation, included undertakings from PTT and its individual directors that they would not in the future infringe design rights in seven of Morgan’s furniture designs. PTT also agreed to pay £65,000 towards damages and costs.

Rodney McMahon, Managing Director of Morgan, commented: “As Chairman of the British Contract Furniture Association, I am passionate about the industry and protecting the rights of designers. My primary objective here was to protect my business and the designs in which we had invested so heavily and which were key products for us. However, I was also keen to demonstrate that the legal process can work effectively for business if you have clear, achievable objectives and the process is well managed. I would also wholly endorse the mediation process which, when used effectively, can result in the resolution of disputes like this effectively at a relatively early stage of proceedings.”

Dids Macdonald, ACID’s Chief Executive added, “Whilst this is a just outcome for such a clear cut case, one has to ask why PTT’s advisors did not suggest that they came to the mediation table even sooner. This is a strong message to the industry that organisations like Morgan who have built their impressive reputation as design-led, world class manufactures, will never allow their brand to be eroded by lookalikes”.

Calling all Creatives...

Need somewhere to be creative in Southampton... join the "Design Chapel"

Southampton’s exciting new creative space giving individuals and small companies the opportunity to work in a wonderful creative environment with likeminded and inspiring fellow artists and designers.

The Chapel itself is grade II listed, dates from the 1840's, and is situated in Southampton’s Old Cemetery on the Common. The building has been converted, in recent years, from a derelict Chapel to an office space, all the original character has been retained alongside modern fixtures and fittings inside, creating a unique working environment.

Proud custodian of the Design Chapel is local designer Chris Orr (who has a small design business based there also). Chris says: "Its a great place to work... it never ceases to amaze me the impact the building has on visitors, and on me when I actually stop and take notice, usually when I am walking in on a nice sunny morning!"

Local illustrator Peter Jarvis is also based at The Chapel and commented "Its like my second home, I can come here evenings or weekends for peace and quiet and to paint, I love the atmosphere" "The thought of having other creatives based here sounds great, we could all benefit from each other’s presence and I know it would enhance further the atmosphere in the Chapel".

Peter Spence, Director of SCDF, recently visited the Chapel and commented on the Studio space saying how behind the idea SCDF are and that he believes it will encourage collaborations and growth of design and subsequent related business.

A Pitch Too Far

Johnny Morgan talks to SCDF Coastal West Sussex committee member and Mint d4b founder Kate Honey about the growing issue of free pitching.

Being asked to provide pitches (and design work) for free as part of the tender process for commissions is, much to the annoyance of designers, becoming an increasingly common request.

However, a recent collaboration by a group of designers in the Worthing area, including SCDF Coastal West Sussex committee member Kate Honey, managed to convince one client that this is not an acceptable way to treat experienced designers.

When a council-related community interest company on the south coast asked local designers to provide a free pitch for a major advertising campaign, the designers in question got together to present a united front in opposition to this approach.

Kate Honey from Mint d4b, one of the designers contacted about the pitch, explains what happened: "The company sent out a brief asking for an expression of interest in and a concept for a banner/poster campaign to appear at a major train station. Basically, they were asking for the design [for free]".

She continues: "This prompted a flurry of emails between the designers about how unprofessional and unfair the brief was and about the need for a no-free-pitch policy. A collective email was sent and after a few days we got a reply from the company apologising for any uneasiness and insult caused."

She recounts how the camaraderie between the designers impressed and inspired her: "What was remarkable was the collaboration. A reason a lot of people don't turn up for the SCDF networking meetings is that they hold their cards close to their chests and don't want to be in competition, but collaborating is to be encouraged".

Collaboration is something that the SCDF is keen to promote and, as this experience shows, it can have a satisfying outcome for the design industry, and raise the status of design among potential clients.

If you have any examples of designers working together in the local area to change people's perception of design, increase the industry's profile or create something extra special, please get in touch. We would be happy to put any interesting stories on the website.

SCDF launches in Southampton

A BRAND new branch of the South Coast Design Forum (SCDF) has been launched in Southampton, heralding a new era of collaboration between designers from every field. More than 100 designers and business leaders from across the city boarded the Queen Mary 2 to celebrate the launch of the Southampton branch, which currently has around 40 members.

David Godber, Deputy Chief Executive of the Design Council, highlighted the strength of design as an industry and revealed that UK companies spend around £50bn on design annually.
He told guests at the launch: “There are around 185,000 people employed in the design sector in the UK. You do have value; you are significant players so I certainly welcome the SCDF. Recent research shows 54 per cent of British firms believe design will help them stay competitive during the downturn so they do need you. More than a quarter of firms have seen their design spend grow over the past 12 months so people are getting it and the awareness-raising is working.” MORE

Speaking at the launch, Tony Boyle, Chairman of the Southampton branch, added: “We want people to start recognising that the south coast is rich in design talent”. Showing examples of work being done locally and collaborations taking place, he said “Many designers in the south are small practices and don’t have a big voice so by coming together it gives them a bigger voice and helps us and them promote the region.” He added that the forum was keen to improve the city by forging strong links with universities and putting forward solutions for the design of the city.

Ed Gould, Creative Director of Southampton marcomms agency, Carswell Gould, and SCDF steering group member, said: “This is a real first for Southampton. Never before have we had an organisation that brings together creative designers across so many industries, working together to establish the city as a hotspot for design. I believe that by working together and getting people on board we can develop the economy of Southampton, designing our way out of the downturn. Designers who work together and collaborate on projects can win bigger contracts so it is essential that we have a forum that brings the industry together.”

SCDF will link together local designers and increase the opportunity for collaboration on projects in every area of design. It will highlight the innovation and creativity of the Southampton region, as well as provide support and network channels for the area, which is fortunate in having a high concentration of talented designers, architects and creatives of all kinds.
It is expected that this will be the last of the string of localised groups under South Coast Design Forum’s umbrella, as it now focuses on strengthening its voice regionally. The forum, an independent, not-for-profit company, already has branches in Chichester, Brighton and Portsmouth and one representing members in Bognor Regis, Littlehampton, Worthing and Shoreham.

The keynote speaker at the launch was Stephen Payne OBE, designer of the QM2 who spoke entertainingly about the whole design process and his fascinating career.

The whole launch event was made possible by Sally Lynskey of Business Southampton, whose team organised the venue and catering in collaboration with Cunard. Sally spoke about the important role Business Southampton plays in the commercial life of the city.

Peter Spence, Forum Director, said: “Now that we have a chain of local branches along the south coast we are keen to raise our profile and membership numbers in order to be taken more seriously. We have had great success in our established branches, particularly Brighton and Chichester, and I know it will work for Southampton too. There is strength in numbers and it is important for us to be as big as possible so members’ voices are heard by local and regional government and large organisations such as the design and arts councils. There are teams and individuals in Southampton and all over the South Coast who can feel isolated so our aim is to reach out to them and help them explore the possibility of meeting other designers and having their opinions heard.”
Members of the Southampton branch of the SCDF include; graphic designers, web designers, architects, award-winning furniture designers, interior designers, textile designers, interior and landscape designers, packaging designers, product designers, event designers and even food designers!
There are currently over 300 members across all SCDF branches. Plans for the future of the Southampton branch include running competitions and exhibitions, to provide strong links with universities, support the designers of tomorrow and to become an authoritative and respected body, whose skills will be recognised and called upon by local authorities and businesses.

Hemingway Speaks at SCDF Southampton Branch Opening

Wayne Hemingway, Chairman of SCDF was the headline speaker at the launch of the Southampton branch of SCDF, hosted by the University of Southampton on 11th June.

Attended by over 100 guests including students of design in fields as diverse as textiles and architecture, the event was opened by the University’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Debra Humphris.

It featured a presentation entitled ‘Seeing beyond Study…’ by Alice Goldie, a textiles graduate currently undertaking her MA in Textiles Design at Winchester School of Art, before Wayne gave the audience a colourful insight into his early design career, how he came from humble beginnings selling old clothes and shoes at Camden Market, to the founding of international fashion label Red or Dead and his latest success designing sheds for B&Q.

Southampton branch chairman and architect Tony Boyle closed proceedings with a lively Q&A session, before an enthused audience adjourned to the bar for further debate.

A Cautionary Tale

One of the affects of the recession is that some clients may be caught in a state of limbo, needing to commission work but with a greatly reduced budget.

Whilst this may mean that design firms will be asked to drop their fees or deliver more for less, another concern is the rise of clients tempted to get the job done very cheaply by going directly to designers otherwise employed.

‘PJ’s’ or ‘private jobs’ done by employed staff in their spare time have always been rife especially in graphic design, and although difficult to prevent does show some sense of entrepreneurial spirit. But in this day of digital design software, I would like to share a cautionary tale with clients, design firms and would-be ‘PJ’ designers!

A few days ago, I received a letter from a firm of solicitors acting on behalf of a company who had concerns regarding a copyright infringement for some packaging they use for one of their products.

Two ex-employees had formed a rival company and were making direct approaches to their customers selling the same product in identical packaging for much less. Clearly this is unreasonable behaviour and a clear case of ‘passing off’.

The letter took me by complete surprise as we do not design packaging, had never heard of the companies in question and had never taken any payment from them.

Puzzled by this I called the solicitor, who filled me in with the details of the case. I asked him why he had contacted us in the first place? Having interrogated the PDF artwork we were identified as the registered licensees of the software used for the illegal design and therefore the authors. - A former employee had done this work as a ‘PJ’!

As a profession, it is important for our future that we are able to demonstrate to potential clients the value of working with bona fide companies, run properly with some form of redress and responsibility. Appointing an established design firm should provide a level of professionalism, experience, responsibility and security.

It is very tempting for the staff member to accept a commission from a ‘client’ and in the current climate there may be plenty of opportunity for this black market trade to grow. But to the employee, check your employment contract, it may be a clear breach to undertake any commissions and deemed a conflict of interest.

But when I started work, all design was done by hand and would leave no trace other than a faint imprint on the backing paper of the drawing board. But today, beware! The software used to complete illicit work, and e-mails used to take the brief leave indelible traces of your activity. Recent events have made this very clear to me.

One problem here is that some commissioners of design do not entirely appreciate the link between the time it takes to do say a piece of artwork, and the cost of running a proper design business.

Paying for legitimate software, and comprehensive professional indemnity insurance is a cost a sole trader or PJ designer may not have and so will therefore be able to undercut even small to medium firms. So if you are a potential commissioner of design, go ‘round the back door’ at your peril. You would not expect your solicitor to do a PJ for you!

Rupert Thompson started as a graduate trainee at what was then Britain's biggest brewer, Bass, and ran groups of pubs before concentrating on marketing, eventually becoming Brand Director of Carling. From there he moved to Morland plc where he ran the 270 Tenanted pub estate and also developed a new brand Old Speckled Hen to the point where it was competing with Newcastle Brown Ale for leadership of the bottled ale sector in UK supermarkets. In 2000 he founded a new company, Refresh, and bought the Ushers brewery beer brand names, and subsequently took over Wychwood Brewery, famous for Hobgoblin beer, and Brakspear's brewery of Henley.
UK Design Skills Alliance

<p>The UK Design Skills Alliance is in the middle of an exciting project that will identify and clearly describe the professional skills that make a successful designer or design manager. </p><p>We‘ve been working with professionals from the design industry and design education on this project and we are now at stage where we want to get the views of more people working in the design industry.</p><p>Could you help us by completing this short survey about what skills, activities and knowledge are important for designers to work effectively?</p><p>The survey should only take around fifteen minutes to complete and can be found <a href="http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=0E0dzvATNThW6a4qTyjN8w_3d_3d">here</a>.</p>
<p>The final set of skills that we come up with will be created into a set of guidelines which will be used to inform those who want to go into the industry as well as helping those already in it understand where they fit and how they can progress.
They’ll also be used to inform what’s being taught in schools and colleges.</p><p>The UK Design Skills Alliance is a group of leading industry and educational organisations led by Creative and Cultural Skills and the Design Council.</p><p>If you would like more information on training and development visit <a href="http://www.designcouncil.org.uk/en/About-Design/Business-Essentials/Training-for-designers/">www.designcouncil.org.uk/trainingfordesigners</a> or visit <a href="http://www.creative-choices.co.uk">www.creative-choices.co.uk</a></p><p>Thank you for your time.</p>

BBC 4 Programme with Wayne Hemingway - 'Style on Trial'

Stuart Maconie and Lauren Laverne put British style and fashion between the 1940s and the 1990s into the dock. To discuss the 1970s they are joined in the studio by British fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, the maker of three-tier wedge sandals for the 70s rock aristocracy Terry de Havilland, and SCDF chairman Wayne Hemingway, a teenager of the decade who went on to create his own fashion label.

Best of British Design: Polypropylene Chair Joins Concorde and Mini on First Stamps of 2009

Are you sitting comfortably? Then join in the celebrations for the Polypropylene Chair which takes a bow on Royal Mail’s first stamps of 2009.

SCDF Patron, Robin Day’s timeless design joins RJ Mitchell’s superlative Supermarine Spitfire and Alec Issigonis’s Mini on ten 1st Class stamps celebrating the finest examples of home grown design excellence spanning the 20th Century.

Issued on 13 January, British Design Classics also features some other instantly recognisable design icons, including Mary Quant’s daring mini skirt and Harry Beck’s innovative map of the London Underground.

And if the stamps provoke feelings of misty-eyed nostalgia, Royal Mail is also issuing a special Prestige Stamp Book which explores the background and history of the designs and the designers and features unique combinations of stamps.

Julietta Edgar, Head of Special Stamps, Royal Mail said: “Special Stamps have always played a major role in showcasing the best of our design talent and in sending the ‘Best of British’ around the world.

<em>“So what better way to launch the 2009 stamp programme than with ten design classics alongside another one of the world’s most recognisable images - Her Majesty the Queen.”</em>

<h2>British Design Classics, Stamp by Stamp</h2>
1st Class – <strong>Supermarine Spitfire</strong> – The superlative Battle of Britain fighter with its distinctive elliptical wings was designed by RJ Mitchell who sadly died before the plane went into production.

1st Class – <strong>Mini Skirt</strong> – Mary Quant rewrote the fashion rules for women forever with her daring design.

1st Class – <strong>The Mini</strong> – Sir Alec Issigonis made use of every available space in the small car that was as much a fashion statement as a means of transport.

1st Class – <strong>Anglepoise Lamp</strong> – George Carwardine’s flexible design brought light wherever it was needed.

1st Class – <strong>Concorde</strong> – Aerospatiale and BAC’s supersonic jet was capable of twice the speed of sound and beautiful to look at too.

1st Class – <strong>K2 Telephone Kiosk</strong> – Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s design bright-red phone box always stood out on the streets of the UK.

1st Class – <strong>Polypropylene Chair</strong> – Found in public buildings throughout the world, almost everyone will have sat on a Robin Day chair at some time.

1st Class – <strong>Penguin Books</strong> – Edward Young’s book jacket design was instantly recognizable as a Penguin edition.

1st Class – <strong>London Underground Map</strong> – Harry Beck’s easy to understand design was based on an electrical wiring diagram.

1st Class – <strong>Routemaster Bus</strong> – Once a symbol of London to visitors from all over the world now only a few of Douglas Scott and Colin Curtis’s classic design remain on London’s streets.

SCDF Christmas Card

This year’s Christmas card followed the earlier practice of asking SCDF members to come up with the design. 2006 was a joint effort between John Mcfaul and Steve Wilson, both based in Chichester; 2007 was designed by Carl Downer and Daniel Stubbs of Sifer Design in Portsmouth and this year’s card, which goes out to many of our contacts in the industry was a collaboration between members in Brighton and along the West Sussex coast. Richard Wolfstrome designed it, Juli Willis of Express Printers arranged the printing on paper supplied by Emma Rogers at The Paper Company. Between them they called in a few favours to get the cutting and finishing done by Pro-forme and K&Laminators.

So thanks to all those involved for their contribution to SCDF; we hope you like it.

Richard describes the card as “A minimalist approach with no printing on the front, but a 'graphic' Christmas tree is die-cut to reveal colour on the inside. On opening, the tree appears with a star and seasonal message from SCDF. Paper is 9lives offset and 100% recycled.”

If interested please submit the following:

Launch of SCDF in Brighton

Chairman Wayne launched the Brighton branch of South Coast Design Forum with an inspiring appeal to designers to get involved in shaping the future. ‘Your time has come’ he told the 100 designers and design enthusiasts at the Old Market Hall Brighton, reminding them that the creative industries contribution to the economy is second only to the service sector.

The design sector in Brighton is highly significant and along with digital media and other creative activities is making an increasing contribution to the local and regional economy.

Chair of the local branch Annalisa Hammond, managing director of Lime Marketing, paid tribute to the efforts of the team that got the initiative off the ground. She says ‘It is now up to the local design community to take SCDF forward and make it the biggest and best of its type.’

Milestone for scdf

This week sees the recruitment of our 250th member, Helen Wyatt, so we are giving her the opportunity to say something about herself and why she has joined SCDF...

"Having worked for over 20 years with creative consultancies and marketing agencies in London and on the South coast, I am now offering my graphic design services on a freelance basis.

I work directly for my own clients, but also in collaboration with other designers and consultancies. I have a studio near Chichester and desk space in Brighton, and am happy to work in-house too.

My responsibilities involve seeing a design job from client brief through to printed or on-screen solutions. Associates include photographers, illustrators, film makers, copywriters and web programmers. Clients range from international corporations and NGO's, to individual entrepreneurs.

I have known about SCDF since its inception and have always been interested to hear news and see work from locally based creatives. Now that I am freelance, I am hoping that SCDF membership will give me increased exposure and credibility... and I'm looking forward to being able to attend the networking meetings and rub shoulders with like-minds."

Bucks New University Summer School

For the third year running, Bucks New University (formerly BCUC) came to Chichester in July for their MA summer school.
When 10 MA Design Students came in 2006, it was something of an experiment but very quickly it became clear that the region is full of design interest.

Due to its success and the initial response from students, course leader Dr Lynn Jones and main sponsor, The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers have worked with the South Coast Design Forum to develop a full itinerary, visiting places of interest such as the Gridshell building at the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum, furniture manufacturers Morgan at Southbourne and other design venues such as Vitra Café at Goodwood Circuit and East Beach Café at Littlehampton.
Although the group make time to sample the area including a beach barbeque, the purpose of the visit is to work on a short intensive design project, ‘Smart Office’. The focus of the project is to examine different aspects of the workplace and develop ideas that form the basis of an exhibition in September at the London showroom of their other main sponsor, KI.
Throughout the week, seminars and tutorials were held with visiting designers including BroomeJenkins and on the last morning Sheridan Coakley, founder of SCP, attended a review of work.

“SCDF is delighted the summer school is a successful part of Bucks MA, but we are especially pleased that our region is attractive to other designers and seen as a good place to live and work.” Peter Spence, Forum Director.

<h1>Are you interested in Public Art?</h1>

If so, why not come along to a seminar the 5 Towns Network are holding on <strong>Friday 4th July between 9.15am - 1.30pm at Ropetackle Arts Centre, Shoreham-by-Sea</strong>. Hear good practice from other towns including Worthing, Shoreham-by-Sea and Crawley across West Sussex about how they undertake public art schemes in their towns. Also presenting will be Artpoint, an organisation in the South East part funded by the Arts Council who advocate and establish opportunities for artists to create new work within public contexts. This will be an opportunity to learn from others and promote good practice across West Sussex.

<strong>Thriving Coastal Town Economies: Towards Asset Based Regeneration – Guy Rubin </strong>

You are invited to the 'Thriving Coastal Town Economies: Towards Asset Based Regeneration' module that BURA are running. This was an earlier planned seminar to take place in February 2008 that had to be cancelled at the last minute.

This day long seminar is taking place on <strong>Friday 11th July between 9.15am and 4.30pm</strong>. Venue is still to be confirmed.

This module offers an historical overview to the rise, decline and renaissance of Coastal Town economies across the UK. It will aim to look at how effective regeneration has been in delivering sustainable communities in the Coastal towns and focus extensively on the unique features of labour markets in Coastal Towns. The afternoon session will in particular take an in depth look at how the Hasting LEGI has focused on the positive and innovative policies that Hastings and other Coastal Towns have introduced to tackle the underlying problems and the last part of the day will address how this best practice can be drawn upon in the revival and regeneration of Coastal Towns. A programme has been attached for your interest. Places are limited for this event.

Please confirm your attendance for any of these events by <strong>5pm on Wednesday 2nd July.</strong>

Return to Type

It was typographers ‘heaven’ at the University of Portsmouth last Wednesday! First a chance to see the film ‘Helvetica’ which, not surprisingly, gave a very positive view of the ubiquitous typeface and then the other side of the coin from Bruno Maag. To say Bruno is an enthusiast for type is like calling Ferrari a car manufacturer. He held the audience enthralled as he gave his forthright views in an exuberant and entertaining fashion. Those that weren’t there missed a treat and we plan to get him back to SCDF at some stage.

Thanks to Carl and Daniel at Sifer and Claire from the University who put in so much work behind the scenes to make the evening such a success for the 50+ members and guests who continued to network long after the presentations.

Thanks also to our sponsors, University of Portsmouth, James McNaughton Group, AVA Academia and Sifer Design.

Does anyone know the significance to SCDF of the photo of the chair with ‘Return to Type’ on it? Answers on a postcard please to pspence@scdf.org.uk Bottle of bubbly for the first correct answer. Director’s decision final.

A new branch of South Coast Design Forum is being set up by SCDF members in Brighton. Under chair Annalisa Hammond MD of Lime Marketing a steering committee is now established and is planning a programme of events. Initially there will be an informal ‘get together’ for the design community in the area to find out what designers want from SCDF that they are not getting from other sources at the moment.

We are aiming for a big launch in the autumn when chairman Wayne will come and sprinkle us with stardust!
The steering committee is Annalisa, Jake Leith from CSD, Catherine Harper and Ronke Adenle from the University of Brighton, Martyn Reding from Preview, Matt Coyne from Lime, Michael Hammond of World Architecture News, Nathan Zaver from Conran and Forum Director Peter Spence.
If you would like to join the steering group and influence things from the outset contact Annalisa or Peter Spence.

Design Week | Hot 50 - Peter Spence

Source: Design Week Supplement
Publication date: 19 February 2008

Peter Spence is an unlikely champion of design. But the former business advisor set up the South Coast Design Forum in May 2006 as a response to local designers who had moved out of London for family and other reasons, but missed the buzz of the capital.

Since then it has gone from strength to strength, with a lobbying agenda established by its chairman, Wayne Hemingway of Hemingway Design. Its representatives sit on the national Design Skills Advisory Panel and it expects the first intake of students in September on a design course it has set up at Chichester University. It also has its own studio, The Mill, in Chichester.

As director of the SCDF, Chichester-based Spence is its only paid employee, but it has attracted a number of illustrious local 'names' as supporters.

Robin and Lucienne Day are patrons and Spence's fellow directors include Barry Jenkins of Broome Jenkins, Johnny Grey, illustrator John McFaul, Wordsearch founder Peter Murray and Carl Leroy-Smith of Portsmouth consultancy Deer Park Alpha.

The SCDF has secured funding from Chichester District Council, West Sussex Council Area Investment Framework, Portsmouth Council Area Investment Framework and the universities of Chichester and Portsmouth, among others.

It is not the only regional design initiative around, but it is proving one of the most successful.

Design Week | Hot 50 - Sheridan Coakley

Source: Design Week Supplement
Publication date: 19 February 2008

Sheridan Coakley has long been a champion of great design. Through his SCP stores he has promoted and commissioned largely British or UK-trained furniture and accessories designers, creating a number of modern classics in the process.

Furniture design 'names' such as Matthew Hilton, Terence Woodgate and Jasper Morrison are among the stars Coakley spotted in the 1990s and the partnerships have continued. Entrepreneur Thorsten van Elten also started out with SCP (see page 22).

With Hilton, Woodgate and Nazanin Kamali, the partnership was reinforced in 2006, when each took a 5 per cent stake in Case, a joint venture between Coakley and former Aero boss Paul Newman which aimed to take top quality furniture into the middle market.

All the designers in the SCP stable, which now includes Scottish textile designer Donna Wilson, work for other furniture companies, and last year Hilton set up his own marque for a domestic furniture line. But there is a strong loyalty to Coakley, nonetheless.

Coakley's influence on design goes beyond his own business and the shops in Shoreditch and west London. He has been involved with the Royal College of Art and the Design Guild Mark contest set up by the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers 'to reward excellence in the design of furniture in volume production'.

Design Week | Hot 50

Source: Design Week Magazine
Publication date: 20 February 2008
Author: Lynda Relph-Knight

There's something very special about Design Week's Hot 50. Published this week, it gives us the rare opportunity to reflect on and honour people and organisations that have gone the extra mile for design.

We use it to push the boundaries of how we define design - we don't write much about boats, for example, but Wally Yachts makes the grade this year. We seek to explore the breadth of interest in design, from politicians and global companies such as Apple to artists, creative activists, educationalists and designers. We hope that inclusion in the listing urges them to keep the momentum going, an aspiration particularly important for UK Government and other influential stakeholders in design.

Only 50 contenders make it into the listing, compiled with the help of a distinguished panel of assessors. Some, notably charities like Audi Design Foundation and The Wellcome Trust, are so prolific and inventive in their support for design that they have become regulars. There are those recognised as 'bubbling under', poised, like D&AD president Simon Waterfall, on the edge of achieving great things - we hope - and ripe for consideration next year. And there are those, sadly, that continue to disappoint.

Interestingly, among those that have yet to make the grade are the main industry bodies. While Anthony Simonds-Gooding earns a place through his tenacity, energy and sound management sense, D&AD and the Design Business Association, both of which he chairs, have yet to make the listing. The same is true of the Design Council, represented this year by its old and new chairmen, Sir George Cox and Sir Michael Bichard, and the Dott 07 venture, but not included in its own right.

You could say that it is the job of these bodies to push the case for design, but how great it would be if they were outstanding in their efforts. We are left celebrating the massive contribution made by individuals associated with such organisations rather than applauding their skilful manoeuvres on behalf of design.

CREATIVE THINKER 'BIG PORTSMOUTH' DAY

Those SCDF members who attended the ‘Big Portsmouth’ day on 4 February were treated to a challenging but stimulating presentation by Charles Landry and Claire Chidley of Comedia the consultancy brought in by Portsmouth CC to do just that.

The challenge is to the people of Portsmouth to think differently and to do different things, differently. At its core the message to the council is: Portsmouth is standing on the cusp of a rare opportunity that will not be grasped by a ‘business as usual approach’. The potential of Portsmouth is immense, yet the potential is blocked in innumerable energy-sapping ways – you need to loosen up a lot. Portsmouth needs to start thinking like a city rather than a town – unpalatable stuff for councillors! But brave of the city council to expose themselves to this type of scrutiny.

New SCDF Branch

SCDF marches on! Chichester has one, Portsmouth has one now we need to see whether the coastal west Sussex towns want a South Coast Design Forum branch.

There will be not one, but two ‘let’s get to know one another’ events during the week beginning 25th February. First on Monday 25th at the Beachcroft Hotel Felpham and then on 28th February at Shoreham Airport. These will be very informal but we just want to get all the designers and design enthusiasts along the coast together to gauge the level of enthusiasm for this new branch. So put these dates in your diary, watch out for further information and make sure you come along and join the members of the steering committee for a glass of something, come to both meetings if you wish!”

Fed up with conceptual art? Well, here's a chance to see some wonderful THINGS."

Now in its 120th year, the Society of Designer Craftsmen is Britain’s oldest multi-craft society. Comprising established craftsmen and a selection of recent graduates, the Society of Designer Craftsmen is at the forefront of the resurgence of craft, producing contemporary designs from traditional materials.

Designer Crafts at The Mall runs from Wednesday 9th January to Sunday 20th January 2008 in the recently refurbished Mall Galleries, housed on the Mall in John Nash's elegant 1827 Regency Terrace.

About The Society
The Society of Designer Craftsmen is the largest and oldest multi-craft society in Britain, formed as the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society by the Society’s first President, Walter Crane in 1888, for the purpose of exhibiting the work of its members. William Morris followed Crane as President in 1891 and Sir Christopher Frayling, Rector of the RCA and Chairman of Arts Council England, is the current President of SDC. The name was changed in the 1960’s to Society of Designer Craftsmen, however the object of the Society remained one of having a selected membership based on innovation and originality, excellence of design and quality craftsmanship, these objectives remain and are still of paramount importance today. The range of work of members’ covers all the designer craft disciplines, ceramics, jewellery, textiles, glass, metalwork, lighting, furniture and wood. Currently membership is in excess of 600. www.societyofdesignercraftsmen.org.uk

A feature of the Portsmouth branch launch was the corporate gift given to everyone there of SCDF member James Chu’s Cardboard Chair. It was an inspired decision to do this as the event was so popular we ran out of chairs at the Spinnaker and the cardboard chairs were put to good use. Meridian TV did a feature on James and all round this link with James was good publicity for SCDF.

Portsmouth Branch of SCDF Launched

Nearly 100 designers and supporters attended the launch of the Portsmouth Branch of the South Coast Design Forum (SCDF) at The Spinnaker Tower last week. Supported by Portsmouth City Council, the University of Portsmouth and the Portsmouth and South East Hants Partnership the branch has 40 members and meets regularly on the 2nd Thursday of the month at The Kings Tavern, Southsea.

Members and guests were welcomed by Portsmouth Branch chairman, Carl Leroy-Smith who said the purpose of the evening was to reach out to local designers and engage with commissioners of design and local decision makers.

Carl introduced Evelyn Thurlby chair of the creative industries task group of main sponsor for the evening Hampshire Economic Partnership. Evelyn welcomed the expansion of SCDF into Hampshire to support efforts to improve the economic prosperity of the area. HEP supports groups like CIBAS and Cafe Culture in Winchester and made a plea for more creative practioners to join the task group.

Lorraine Farrelly deputy head of the school of architecture at University of Portsmouth spoke of the way good design can make a difference to an area and welcomed the opportunity to work with SCDF in improving communication between architects, designers and the community.

Keynote speaker for the evening Wayne Hemingway founder of fashion chain Red or Dead and chair of SCDF told designers ‘their time had come’. He reminded the audience that Gordon Brown recognised that some time ago: with the creative industries now second only to the service industries in economic value to the UK and truancy levels amongst art & design students the lowest in schools because the subject is ‘interesting’, the moment is there to be seized. In a wide ranging talk drawing on his own experiences in the design world he entertained and inspired everyone and finished by saying that Portsmouth was on an upward curve and it was up to the creatives in the city to ‘make the place fly’.

There was a novel twist to the evening when all guests were given a portable cardboard chair designed and manufactured by University of Portsmouth student James Chu which was featured on Meridian News the previous evening.

South East Excellence

<p>South East Excellence was established by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) in 2005 to support the urban renaissance of our towns and cities. South East Excellence, the brand name for the Regional Centre of Excellence, is seeking to develop a pan-professional and cross-sector learning culture and to increase the number of people with the skills and knowledge to build sustainable communities through the use of peer group learning, and learning from experience and practice, rather than traditional and more formal training routes. The South Coast Design Forum will provide an excellence opportunity to support in delivering this agenda on the South Coast and is considered to be one of our partners.
<br/><strong>Our Mission</strong>: Creating opportunities to develop skills to build sustainable communities - quality places where people want to live, work and enjoy their leisure.<br/><a href="http://www.southeastexcellence.co.uk">www.southeastexcellence.co.uk</a></p>
<p><img src="images/news/SEE_logo.jpg"></p>
<br/>
<h3 >Does your company provide B2B services?</h3><p>If so, then you could be introduced to Sussex businesses who are looking for the type of services you provide.<br/>Not only that, but your company and it's services would be visible to all six Business Link organisations, covering businesses across the whole of the south east. That's a potential 336,000 organisations who could be looking for your services. Helping our customers find solutions for their particular business needs is a key aspect of the Business Link service. The solutions sometimes involve a specialist service and our Supplier Matching Service has at its heart a web-enabled database that we can use to search for possible sources of specific skills. Registration on the Supplier Matching Service database is free of charge and, unless in connection with a special offer, payment for any services provided by your company would be a matter of agreement between the customer and yourselves. Whilst listing on this database does not infer selection for any work, it does mean that you could be considered if one of our customers is looking for a service you provide.<br/><a href="http://www.suppliermatching.co.uk">Register your business on the Business Link Supplier Matching Service database </a></p>

Pallant House Gallery on a lovely May evening was an inspired choice to celebrate a successful first year for the South Coast Design Forum and enjoy a debate on the built environment.

Whilst Chichester is still at the heart of SCDF, architects, planners, consultants, local government officers, politicians, government agencies, designers and educators came from as far afield as London, Guildford, Southampton and Portsmouth shared the evening with members of the Forum.

SCDF chairman Wayne Hemingway opened the evening in his inimitable fashion covering our successes, which are many and varied and putting down a marker for developers of sensitive sites that have importance to communities beyond their ‘development’ value.

We were fortunate to attract Peter Murray of Wordsearch to chair a panel comprising Barry Jenkins of BroomeJenkins, a founder of SCDF, Paul Grover from the Solent Centre for Architecture, Paul White from KMA Planning Consultants and Beverley Gearey from Martlet Homes.

Under the heading of ‘how can the local community influence the quality of design in their own backyard’ a lively debate followed involving the audience of nearly 100.

After the debate serious networking took place over wine and canapés and for those visiting the gallery for the first time guided tours were available.

This was a timely event for those with an interest in the built environment. Planning consultants, developers, architects, local government officers, designers of all disciplines….everyone with a personal agenda, but equally it seemed with a common aim that bought them together to listen to five panellists give their views on the built environment issues facing Chichester and communities everywhere before being invited to start the debate on what the problems are and how they might be solved. But this was only one evening and the debate, many felt, only scratched the surface…

….the issue of public consultation was raised and talked about at length…many valuing its importance in theory but bemoaning it's effect in practice, especially when for the lay person the process is not only impossible to follow, but apparently futile when it is perceived that the powers that be have made a decision already and are going through the motions to tick a box.

….it argued that the average lay person/councillor does not have the knowledge or experience to fully understand the information given to them during the planning process. It was then put to the debate that developers, architects and planning consultants need to take some responsibility for this lack of understanding and it was discussed how architecture and planning had in fact a language of its own. It was suggested that professionals therefore had a duty to make this information more accessible to the general public and those making the decisions whether it be at public consultation or committee stage.

…there seemed to be a consensus that more emphasis needed to be placed on design and that stricter guidelines should be drawn up to prevent developers building 'poorly designed boxes which they would never live in themselves and will probably need knocking down in 20 years time'. This general agreement was encouraging as it seems that the SCDFhas a pool of likeminded, passionate people to tap into and support in a collective desire to make Chichester a better place.

…it also seems that there is an agreement between the private sector and local authority that planning officers should have urban design training in order to help them understand and evaluate plans and design statements. Sam Howes, Deputy Chief Executive at Chichester District Council agreed with the panel and the audience that this was an aim of the Council and that the SCDF may be able to fill that gap, as it had for the canal basin in producing a Design Brief for developers.

…all these improvements, it was felt, would help to contribute towards the two main goals identified during the course of the evening….reducing the time it takes for an application to be decided upon whilst looking at how 8 and 13 week targets suffocate and obscure good design and improving the level of understanding and education of the public, officers and members dealing with the application…both of these aims it was felt, would help to create an environment whereby we could all start with a 'yes, lets discuss' rather than just a resounding 'no'.

Canal Basin Design Guide

Chichester District Council, in its role as the local planning authority, asked the South Coast Design Forum for help in working up a design guide to assist developers in bringing forward schemes for the canal basin site in the centre of Chichester. This was something the SCDF has been keen to get involved in as it gives local designers the chance to influence the built environment at an early stage. If you would like to know more about this, who was involved, the process we went through and whether something like this could be produced in your area please contact Peter Spence at info@scdf.org.uk

Studios and Workshops

Studios for Artists and Designers

It is pretty well known that there is a lack of studio and workshop space for artists and designer makers in Chichester. Tim Sandys-Renton has made lots of progress in trying to get something on the agenda for the Graylingwell development in the medium to longer term through Studios4artists. Stunninstuf has posted more about this on the discussion pages.

However Paul and Sylvia Kope&#269;ek are enthusiastically pursuing another initiative which we are bringing to the attention of the design community. This could become a reality next year.

Paul and Sylvia live and work in Chichester. They are both painters with very good honours degrees in Fine Art. Sylvia also has an MA(Ed). Paul has worked for many years as an art historian, and also chairs the Standing Advisory Committee for Art and Design for AQA. Sylvia was Art and Design Adviser for West Sussex County Council and subsequently, until September 2006, was Senior Adviser for Portsmouth City Council. They now work as freelance consultants for art and design and education.

What is their Vision?

· They intend to open a gallery and a suite of studios;
· They will offer studios to rent for established artists and designers in the region;
· the gallery will offer a regular programme of shows of a high quality for both contemporary artists and designers, and 20th century British art;
and
· the third strand of the vision is to offer an education programme to be accessed by post 16 year old students in sixth form colleges, FE colleges and local universities. They would like to offer an e-learning facility linked to a number of studios and to the exhibitions.

What are they doing to achieve this vision?

· They are in currently in negotiation with a local business, to secure appropriate premises to house studios and a gallery located close to the city centre;
· They invite expressions of interest from artists and designers and welcome their views on the project;
· They will be seeking funding to enable the project to be up and running in 2007.

You can contact:
Paul by email : kopecek.kopecek@btopenworld.com or by mobile: 07815 921784
Sylvia by email Sylvia@kopecek.co.uk or by mobile: 07812 499234

SCDF – What’s happening? An Update

We’ve resumed our Members Meetings, the next one is on 23rd November at East Pallant House in Chichester when John McFaul will talk about his work in graphic design for world famous companies and Mark Laurence will talk about landscape design and he might just drift into issues like sustainability.

We have now reached the point where we have 60 paid-up members and 68 registered users on the re-vamped discussion pages on the website.

Behind the scenes the committee has approved a plan for scdf to enter the next stage of development. This involves seeking funding from a number of sources to enable the appointment of someone to expand scdf right across the region, increase membership and establish a comprehensive and exciting programme of events.

In the past 2 weeks we have received encouraging responses from universities across the region as well as government support agencies and Arts Council England.

Oh and we’re nearly ready to launch our eNewsletter to communicate with those in our network who are not regular viewers of the website.

Cornwall Design Week

After an extremely successful Design Week last year, the Cornwall Design Forum organised their second event, 4th – 8th September, which was hosted by University College Falmouth and held at their Tremough Campus.

Our chairman Wayne spoke at the inaugural meeting last year and this years special guest was Amanda Lavete from London based, international design company Future Systems. This multi-award winning company works in both architectural and product design being responsible for the new Lords media centre, Selfridges in Birmingham, the floating bridge at London Docklands, products such as the Alessi tea & coffee set and work with Ferrari. Tickets were £20 for members, £30 for non members.

I visited the special exhibition presenting the best and most innovative design work in the county from members of the Cornwall Design Forum. Various disciplines from the industry were showcased including installation pieces representative of Interior Design, Fashion, Graphics, Architecture, product and Furniture. Entry to the exhibition was free and open to all.

We are planning something similar for next year so it was useful to see how the Cornwall team organised the event.

Additional events were held to build links between the design profession, the business community and the designers of tomorrow with each day having a special focus.

By way of background The Cornwall Design Forum was set up in November 2004 by a group of successful designers in response to the Cultural Industries Task Force review which required input on the main priorities for the Design Sector in Cornwall. Consequentially, as well as the Cornwall Design Week, a website is due to be launched which will advise existing & new users of the design industry on how to gain the most from their relationships with designers; how to write a design brief etc.

The Cornish design Industry has boomed in recent years
Facts & Figures:
Design is part of the Creative Industries which as a whole contributes 5% of GDP to the Cornish Economy with an annual turnover of over £348 Million.
The Design Council’s annual research, covering 1500 businesses of all sizes and sectors has produced powerful evidence linking design directly to business success. Indicators include bigger profits, higher share prices and increased competitiveness.
While only 30% of UK businesses are investing in design, the research suggests they are getting good value for money. On average, they expected a 50 per cent return on their most successful project, but they actually got a return of more than 75 per cent.

Since setting up, the Cornwall Design Forum:
• Has been contacted by many other regions throughout the UK (including scdf) wanting to set up similar forums and the Cornwall Design Forum is held up as a model of good practice
• Is ensuring the voice of Cornwall Designers are heard at the highest level, are represented and representing on the National Design Council advisory group
• Is supporting the South West Design Forum run by The Regional Development Agency and also supporting the Cornwall Business Week, run by Cornwall Pure Business.
• Is building strong working partnerships with University College Falmouth and Cornwall Arts marketing
• Has secured funding from the Arts Council to develop a comprehensive website

The Cornwall Design Forum is supported by Creative Kernow an Arts Council England Funded project

Comments on SCDF Launch

Despite the 4 May being the hottest day of 2006 so far with temperatures in the mid 20’s, David Kester - CEO of the Design Council, Professor Philip Robinson - Vice Chancellor of the University of Chichester and Wayne Hemingway – Designer, commentator and TV personality, addressed an audience of 130 at the Bishop Otter Campus of the University of Chichester.
The occasion; the first event held by the South Coast Design Forum (SCDF).

In the past few months the design press has reported on the formation of several regional groups like the SCDF, which share a common aim to promote regional design talent, raise the profile of design within their respective region and above all, establish a vibrant local design community for social, commercial and professional reasons.

For Wayne Hemmingway, this was not just a speaking engagement (of which he has many). But was also an opportunity to launch an enterprise he is deeply committed to, as a resident of Chichester, as an advocate of connected and socially aware design, and as the current chairman of the SCDF.

Whilst the primary aim of the event, was to test local interest and attract potential members, it was also to initiate a debate about the role of design in the local economy, its impact on the built environment and the need to raise expectations and standards in all aspects of design, its implementation and future sustainability.

The idea of the forum and the event was born out of a group of local people engaged in a variety of design fields, brought together by Peter Spence and Aleks Ellis of the Economic Development Service at Chichester District Council. Working to support local businesses, Peter and Aleks’ interest in design had simultaneously triggered an idea among a group of people, who after a year or so of meeting once a month over lunch, now make up the board of the South Coast Design Forum.

Among the group there is a firm belief and commitment that there is a real need to draw out designers within the region and to form something of a lobby to address local issues, as well as a network of resource for local commissioners of design to access. Although formed in Chichester, as the name implies, the geographical reach of the SCDF is intended to spread east and westwards, to connect along the south coast with a wider constituency of Designers, Universities, Local Authorities, Property Developers and Manufacturers. Through raising the profile of design as an active sector within the region, it is also hoped to retain design commissions, which may otherwise automatically go to London agencies.

Still in its relative infancy the SCDF is essentially a club, but like any club, it will become what the members make it. There are plans to develop special interest groups to support specific design disciplines, a link to education and knowledge exchange, and sign posting through the web-site to business support (specific to the design industry). But the future development of the SCDF is down to the interest generated by the event on the 4 May and ultimately the needs of its members.

However, based on initial response and given the success of other regional groups, there is clearly an appetite within the design and business communities for this kind of enterprise, so the outlook for the South Coast Design Forum is good. With Wayne Hemingway as Chairman and Robin and Lucienne Day OBE(s), as patrons, the SCDF is fortunate to have not only the involvement and support of a wider group of capable professionals, but the weight and pedigree of three of the UK’s best known and accomplished Designers.

<h2>Barry Jenkins</h2>

Aa audience of design creatives witnessed the birth of something new in Chichester recently. This event, largely unnoticed by the general public, will be like throwing a pebble into a still pond. A small event, but watch the ripples grow.

I predict that within two years, no major design will take place on the South Coast without a member of SCDF being involved and that Chichester and the South Coast will become a leading place to look to by the commissioners of design. Move over London …

<h2>Mark Laurence</h2>

Having digested the whole night, regurgitated it several times (as one does sometimes) in the hope of finding where I'd put (down) the few detractors and helped it all down with substantial glass of post-event praise I can honestly say the launch was a thorough success. The evening itself was privileged to see that man Hemingway in notable good form...as was David Kester of the Design Council. Both setting quite a considerable scene for the audience and putting a definite angle on what we plan to do and how we plan to do it ... with huge emphasis on the WHY. From the amount of people who came to talk to me during the break I can only say that this has got more than a few people thinking. I was particularly struck by those representatives from the educational establishments in and around Chichester and surrounding areas including Brighton and Portsmouth. Not only were they eager to get involved they have since got their own respective balls rolling in conjunction with the forum (and each other) which I can only see as being a positive dynamic within a body aiming to change a culture. It seemed to me that these people only needed a soap box. The forum will provide enough shelter for all these people intent on change ... and now they have it I'm sure this 'change' thing will happen.

The Q&A had its usual detractors. Those who were quick to point the finger when indeed they should be looking at themselves. Naive?? What! Maybe we weren't clear enough in our explanation that the forum is bigger than the sum of its parts. Anyone can make a difference. What we don't need is those who are so blinkered by self gain that they are only able to put up hurdles. Perhaps they are the ones needing that important culture change. They seem unaware of the word 'halcyon'. Dreams are actually all we have! ... but as Designers we have considerable voice ... and considerable talents which can bring the best out of an ailing World. Sure, we won't be pleasing everyone all the time ... but if we aim to please the majority most of the time then we might just succeed.

Emails haven't ceased and time is being booked up. We've started something big here. I'm more excited by it all now than ever. It pains me that I'm not concerning myself with it 24/7 but that’s the nature of the beast I suppose. There's a limit to what I personally can do ... but I'll be spreading the word as I go I can assure you.

Stonking Launch - what next?

What a fantastic launch, it exceeded our expectations thank you to all who contributed to its success.

Must mention Wayne for another inspiring talk and it was great to see Gerardine too. Thanks also to David Kester for dashing down from the ‘smoke’ and sharing the ‘big picture’ with us.

Thanks to Philip and Sue for making the Showroom at the University available and making sure things ran smoothly, great venue!

Must mention Louise for bringing the event management skills of Giant Apple to bear and Steve and John for the design and graphic work on the delegate packs.

Walking through Chichester the morning after someone dashed across the road to congratulate scdf on the launch and the professionalism of the whole event. This is great to hear because it was done on a shoestring and relied on the immense generosity of a number of people and organisations.

So, spread the news, scdf is launched just watch us go …!

A fascinating glimpse of what is to come: a smattering of politics, big picture design issues, design as healing of local ills, pleasure of working with new friends and colleagues across all disciplines to make thing happen - and a sense that we can make change to our environments. The future may be global but will be checked and balanced by local initiatives. And that is us, folks.

It was a good turn out, some genuine interaction between creative people, some challenging questions asked about the role and power of design .... onwards and upwards…
